Strengthening Sports Clubs Through Governance and Organizational Excellence

Context:

In today’s competitive sports landscape, clubs must operate not only as athletic powerhouses but also as professionally managed organizations. For several prominent professional sports clubs in MENA, the lack of structured governance and organizational clarity was holding back their full potential. Without defined strategies, formal policies, or mechanisms for accountability, operational inefficiencies persisted and strategic ambitions remained out of reach.

Strategic Gears was brought in to lead a sweeping transformation focused on governance, strategy, and operational design—aiming to elevate club performance both on and off the field.

Approach:

Working closely with each club, we designed and implemented comprehensive governance frameworks tailored to their unique needs and ambitions. These frameworks introduced clear decision-making structures, accountability systems, and defined roles across departments—ensuring that clubs were equipped to manage resources effectively and achieve long-term objectives.

As part of the transformation, we developed complete policy and procedure manuals for every major function within the clubs, from administration to finance, marketing, and sports operations. These guides standardized internal processes, reduced ambiguity, and provided staff with consistent operating instructions.

We also introduced a full suite of job descriptions and performance evaluation tools, aligning individual roles with strategic goals. This not only clarified expectations but also created a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

In one landmark example, we supported a leading club in becoming the first in its region to formalize internal regulations, setting a precedent for how contractual relationships between club members and management should be structured. Another top-tier club underwent a full organizational transformation, evolving into a self-managed, process-driven entity with clearly documented workflows and empowered leadership. We also helped a third club transition into a corporate structure, equipping it with the governance model required to operate as a modern sports company.

To ensure long-term oversight, we established standing committees and recurring governance meetings, embedding compliance and performance monitoring into the clubs’ operational rhythms. These structures provided an institutional backbone for sustained progress.

Results:



The impact was both immediate and lasting. Clubs began operating under clear strategies and customized organizational structures, empowering staff to perform at a higher level. Through hands-on training and capacity building, internal teams were fully onboarded to the new systems and policies—ensuring smooth adoption and internal ownership. As a result, these clubs were able to improve their governance assessment scores and unlock additional funding from their oversight bodies, further accelerating their growth and development.
